Compromises are common phenomena in everyday life, but their nature is unclear and their value is disputed. Compromises cannot be avoided even when they violate prevailing values and ideals. This is the case in love, work, politics, and many other realms. Generally, if love and politics are like religion, then they cannot be bought nor can they be compromised. If love and politics are similar to commercial transactions, then they can be bought and can also be compromised and negotiated. Love and politics seem to be similar to both, but identical to neither.
