Dozens of Israelis held a preliminary meeting at the Charney Center in preparation for a Congress of the People to take place on July 22, 2016. This will be the largest Congress to date, taking place in the center of Tel Aviv, bringing together 250 Israelis and 250 Palestinians. The participants will attempt to come to a peace agreement. In past Congresses of the People, the participants nearly constantly did reach an agreement, showing that the people are ready. The hope is that if the political establishment can not come to terms, the people might show them the way.

Israeli-Palestinian Public Negotiating Congresses
Israelis and Palestinians negotiated solutions to their tragic conflict at two locations in the center of Tel-Aviv: Youth - In the Salon Conference Hall, ZOA House; Adults - In an open public place in front of ZOA House
This was the first time that two public negotiating congresses were conducted simultaneously: Youth and Adults.
Apparently, it turned out that it was much easier for the young generation to reach agreements on certain important topics. Israelis concluded that the youth is more creative than the adults, while Palestinians concluded that the youth is naïve and the adults are more experienced. The different interpretations demonstrated the cultural gap between the two societies.
The two sides agreed that the event is another important step towards the establishment of a major Israeli-Palestinian Public Negotiating Congress with political influence. This major peacemaking institution is designed to involve people, from all walks of life, in the peacemaking efforts and motivate the leaderships to conclude agreements.
"This momentum must continue and grow"
Florida Atlantic University: The Passing of Champion of Peace: Leon Charney
Leon Charney played a pivotal role in achieving the historic 1978 peace accords.
BY AMY HAYCOCK | 3/22/2016
The University community is saddened to learn of the death of Leon Charney, who was awarded an FAU honorary doctorate last December in recognition of the pivotal role he played in achieving the historic 1978 peace accords between Israel and Egypt. Mr. Charney passed away Monday, March 21 after being in poor health for several years.
A lawyer and businessman, he worked through “back door channels” to bring together Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat for peace talks at Camp David. The resulting peace agreement – the first ever concluded between the Jewish state and an Arab nation – remains in effect to this day. President Jimmy Carter called Mr. Charney “the unsung hero” of that great accomplishment.
Mr. Charney went on to become a highly successful New York real estate investor, talk show host and author. For more than 25 years, he moderated “The Leon Charney Report,” an award-winning, nationally televised program. He also wrote five books, including Back Door Channels – The Price of Peace, which was made into a documentary video that won an Emmy.
In presenting him with an honorary doctorate of humane letters, President Kelly said, “Leon Charney shows unequivocally that one person can make a huge difference in the world. Florida Atlantic University is privileged to shine a light on this unsung champion of peace.”
The University community extends sincere sympathy to Mr. Charney’s wife, Tzili, and their twin sons, Mickey and Nati.
