New York: Tzili Charney Received An Honorary Doctorate from Yeshiva University

Tzili Charney accepting Honorary Doctorate Degree speech from Yeshiva University with Rabbi Hebert Dobrinsky (L) and President Richard M. Joel (R).

Philanthropist and activist Tzili Charney was awarded an honorary degree in recognition of her generosity to the University. President Joel praised Charney for her “love, loyalty, vigor, sophistication and unyielding Jewish pride.”

Quoting her husband, Charney told graduates to “examine the options you have available to you. Maintain an awareness of this. Make proper choices and bring about changes in your life while, at the same time, continuing to make the world a better place.”

On 19 May 2017, two hundred Israeli & Palestinian women convened in Tel Aviv to negotiate solutions to the conflict. Having been the first time only women participated in a public negotiating process, this was a rare and powerful event in the Middle East.

Student delegation in New York with their award

The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program at Florida Atlantic University received the Distinguished Delegation Award at the National Model United Nations competition in New York City. Twenty-six FAU undergraduates joined more than 5,500 college students from 350 universities in the annual competition where schools represent countries and students step into the shoes of diplomats to solve global problems.

The gift will allow for the creation of three Leon Charney Scholarships each fall and spring semester, as well as expand the existing Diplomacy Program to create an Undergraduate Honors Program (UHP) delegation, and expand to create an FAU High School delegation.  The UHP and FAU High students will be trained in their own class and will compete in nationals in Washington, D.C. each fall.
