On February 26th and February 28th, two graduating ceremonies of two groups formulated by the “Aharai (Follow Me)” association and sponsored by the Leon Charney Resolution Center took place. One ceremony was in the City of Lod and the other in Jerusalem. The group in Lod went on a three-day hiking trek from Jerusalem to Lod, only to arrive straight into the auditorium in which their parents and loved ones awaited them with proud and open arms. CRC is happy to support the young students of such an organisation, which promotes communication, social involvement and change, just as our mission brings people together in order to make change and peace.
Haifa University and Mind of Peace to host largest Israeli-Palestinian student congress

The University of Haifa hosts largest Israeli-Palestinian student congress ever held in the region in partnership with the Charney Resolution Center. Some 150 Israeli and Palestinian university and high school students gathered on campus this week to ‘negotiate’ peaceful solutions to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. They were greeted by President Ron Robin, Prof. Gad Barzilai, Vice Provost and Head of the International School, and Prof. Jenny Kurman, Dean of Students. Students conducted negotiation role-play simulations to build mutual trust, end violence and come up with creative solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Dr. Sapir Handelman, winner of the prestigious Peter Baker Prize for Peace and Conflict Research, led the discussions. The event was initiated by longstanding University supporter Dr. Tzili Charney, founder of the Leon Charney Resolution Center in honor of her late husband Leon H. Charney. The Center aims to motivate individuals, especially the next generation, to pursue peaceful solutions by providing training in the art of negotiation and mediation. The student congress was held in cooperation with Minds of Peace.

CRC@ EMIS Peace Talks Simulation
Sapir Handelman, CEO of the “Minds of Peace” organisation and negotiation moderator, met up with a group of EMIS students in order to prepare them for the annual Peace Simulation that will be taking place February 21st until February 22nd at the Leon Charney Resolution Center in HaKfar HaYarok, Israel. Throughout this meeting, he explained to them the structure of the simulation, what each stage of the debate is and what they would need to be doing throughout the entire event. Tzili Charney, founder of The Leon Charney Resolution Center was part of the delegation of Anwar Sadat’s Congressional Gold Medal Commission on Tuesday, February 19th at the Presidential Palace in Cairo, Egypt. She engaged President Sisi in dialogue pertaining to the important mission of the Resolution Center and gave an overview of its various programs. Afterwords, she received some words of encouragement and appreciation from President Sisi about how important the center’s mission is and to continue its ongoing effort to reach regional peace.

FAU Diplomacy Program Luncheonette
Florida Atlantic University President John Kelly hosted members of the Leon Charney Diplomacy Program to a luncheon to celebrate the program’s accomplishments. In November, the Diplomacy Program placed first overall out of sixty competing universities at the National Model United Nations simulation in Washington, D.C. The program competes this spring in Nationals in New York City and in the Model European Union simulation hosted by the University of Indiana.
The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program, which trains students in world affairs, dispute resolution and debate, was established in 1996. To date, the program has won thirty-two national and international awards for academic excellence. In 2017, the program was named to honor the diplomatic legacy of Leon Charney.

On November 13th, Tzili Charney was an honorary guest at the occasion of the centennial of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's birth and the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Camp David Accords, the Anwar Sadat Congressional Gold Medal Commission celebrates his recognition by the US Congress with a Congressional Gold Medal for his efforts to promote peace and reconciliation. The event took place at the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington DC.
Of his many achievements, President Sadat is most widely recognized for making peace with Israel. On November 19, 1977, in the aftermath of the Yom Kippur war, he became the first Arab leader to officially visit Israel. In his address to the Knesset, he proposed ending 30 years of hate and animosity between his country and the State of Israel through establishing a mutually beneficial peace treaty. This action ended up laying the foundation for the first round of serious and direct negotiations between the two countries. During this time, President Sadat cultivated a strong working relationship with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger throughout months of shuttle diplomacy. Secretary Kissinger later remarked, "He [Sadat] possessed that combination of insight and courage which marks a great statesman."
As a result, on September 17, 1978, President Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin signed the Camp David Accords, the first step towards the 1979 signing of a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. President Sadat and Prime Minister Begin were awarded the Nobel Prize for their efforts in 1978.
Anwar Sadat was one of the greatest visionaries the world has ever seen, a champion of peace and a pioneer of diplomacy. He devoted - and lost - his life to combat, hatred and intolerance, sending a message to the world that peace can prevail.
Today, it is more important than ever to remember these virtues of goodwill and peace as Israel seeks to establish peace and security in the Middle East. As President Sadat said on his visit to Israel in 1977, "There are moments in the life of nations and peoples when it is incumbent on those known for their wisdom and clarity of vision to overlook the past, with all its complexities and weighing memories, in a bold drive toward new horizons."
