Jerusalem Week 17: Visual Art Group
Early on Tuesday morning, January 31st, the Visual Arts students of EMIS woke up for a jam-packed day ahead. With the aim of establishing an understanding of the connection between art and conflict, we were determined to, for a day, open our ears and minds to the perspectives of local artists. So, after eating breakfast and packing a lunch, we were off, headed towards the hills of Jerusalem, to the leading arts and design school in Israel, Bezalel University.

The Jewish Bookshelf at Beit Hatfusot: The Mystery of The Kaddish and The Battle of The Two Talmuds
On Friday, December 30, 2016, Beit Hatfutsot hosted a discussion among scholars titled "The Jewish Bookshelf--The Mystery of the Kaddish and the Battle of the Two Talmuds." The books were written by Leon H. Charney Z"L and Saul Mayzlish and the event was initiated by Tzili Charney in honor of her husband Leon on the occasion of the Hebrew publication of The Two Talmuds.

Over 200 distinguished guests attended the annual benefit dinner in honor of Mr. Leon Charney's legacy at the Hilton Tel Aviv, where the main topic was analyzing the USA’s Presidential election from a political, media, and gender perspective. Keynote speaker Tzipi Livni, co-head of the Zionist Camp, spoke about the fundamental importance of female leadership, and women’s roles in affecting political change. According to Livni, although she believes that the land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people, a political compromise is necessary to ensure the future safety and prosperity of Israel. Afterward, a panel chaired by Brigadier General Israela Oron and featuring Dana Weiss, Talley Singer, and Sima Shine discussed the role that “post-truth” played in the US’ presidential election and outlined a vision for developing an honest political atmosphere for the future.

Dozens of Israelis held a preliminary meeting at the Charney Center in preparation for a Congress of the People to take place on July 22, 2016. This will be the largest Congress to date, taking place in the center of Tel Aviv, bringing together 250 Israelis and 250 Palestinians. The participants will attempt to come to a peace agreement. In past Congresses of the People, the participants nearly constantly did reach an agreement, showing that the people are ready. The hope is that if the political establishment can not come to terms, the people might show them the way.
